My son will be the only sixth year at his school next year. This isn't that uncommon as this year there was only one sixth year in his class and since we've been at the school it has happened several other times. Typically, students leave to start middle school in the sixth grade because they either want to get into a private school when the main enrollment period is happening or because they want to make friends with the initial group of students all coming in together.
My son is happy to be staying at his school and not overly worried about the following year. We'll find out more when we know more next year. He will have a big responsibility to be the leader of the class in many things, something that being in a multi-year classroom has as an advantage. You get to see the other students helping take on leadership roles and then you can model that behavior when you're older.
My son does have a lot of maturing to do though as he is not the most calm of his classmates. We are meeting with his teachers next week. I know there will be challenges next year for him. I hope there will be more successes than ever in the past.
The Tiny Girl Chronicles: My daughter doesn't feel well today. She is tired. Is she sick? Normally we wouldn't worry, but this is pandemic times. So we worry. We'll know more tomorrow. She has no fever and she ate a normal dinner, but she is definitely tired.
The Big Boy Update: My son will be officially a middle schooler (age-wise at least) starting tomorrow when school lets out mid-day. He will insist he isn't actually a sixth year until the first day of school.
